TIDES ON THE JAVA SEA (Alan Frendy Koropitan) ȯɽ :
As many shelf ecosystems, the Java Sea is under growing stress caused by the various and partly conflicting human demands, such as human settlement, industry and infrastructure, and fishing activities. In order to study the environmental problems, firstly we have to describe the physical aspect of the Java Sea. We used the three-dimensional hydrodynamic Princeton Ocean Model and field observation from eleven tidal gauge stations, seven current meter mooring buoys, and hydrographic data to analyze tides, tidal current and mixing quantities. The calculated elevation cotidal charts are mostly comparable with field observations and previous research. We found K1 component is a major tidal constituent and strong related with resonance that occurs in the central part of the Java Sea. The model result indicates that an increase in vertical eddy viscosity magnitudes and bottom friction velocities are associated with strong K1 tidal current in the region of tidal resonance. Both north-east and south-west monsoon CTD profile are investigated and increased mixing is found in the central part of the Java Sea. The model results suggest that tides contribute significantly to the turbulent mixing, also important for vertical exchange of material and its behavior in the Java Sea region.
