Snow and Ice Research in the University of Helsinki (Prof. Matti Lepparanta) ȯɽ :
Snow and ice cover the nature of Finland for 4-7 months annually. Therefore it is highly motivated for the Finns to invest in the research in this area. Snow and ice science has been a major field in the Division of Geophysics of the University of Helsinki; since 1999 the a Snow and Ice Graduate School has been ongoing with about ten PhD students. The objects are glaciers, seasonal snow cover, sea ice dynamics, and lake and river ice, impurities in floating ice, remote sensing and polar oceanography. Much of the sea ice research has been performed in the Baltic Sea, from field campaigns to ice climate scenarios by mathematical modeling. Students of the Graduate School work also on snow and ice in Svalbard, Arctic seas and Antarctica. In the education, Geophysics of Snow and Ice is given annually, advanced undergraduate courses every second year, and post-graduate courses about one per year.
