Modeling of gravitational separation using the NIES global atmospheric tracer transport model (Dmitry Belikov)

The concept of the different dynamical regimes between two regions called the homosphere (perfect mixing) in the lower part of the atmosphere and the heterosphere (diffusive equilibrium), where molecular diffusion leads to a separation of the atmospheric constituents was proposed in the 1920s. The process of atmospheric molecules separation depending on their molar masses due to gravity is ’gravitational separation’. The gravitational separation of atmospheric components dominant in the atmosphere above a level of about 100 km called the turbopause. Recently, the existence of gravitational separation of the major atmospheric components in the stratosphere was confirmed both experimentally using a precise cryogenic sampler and theoretically by 2-dimensional numerical model simulations (Ishidoya et al., 2013). Here we extend this work by performing a more quantitative analysis using three-dimensional model. Currently, the ’mean age of air’, defined as the average time that an air parcel has spent in the stratosphere is perhaps best known for being a proxy for the rate of the stratospheric mean meridional circulation and the Brewer-Dobson circulation (BDC). It also is being used to determine air mass fluxes between the troposphere and stratosphere. As future changes to the BDC are likely to be complex, a suite of methods and parameters is necessary to detect it. It was proposed usability of gravitational separation as a new indicator of changes in the atmospheric circulation in the stratosphere. Analyses of the gravitational separation, in addition to the CO2 and SF6 ages, provide us with useful information about the stratospheric circulation. In this work, the simulated gravitational separation and age of air are compared with observations carried out using a balloon-borne cryogenic air sampler over Polar Regions, temperate latitudes, and tropics. We analyze the relationship of the gravitational separation with age of air and discuss its implementation for studying the long-term changes in the stratosphere.
