Abstract Frequent occurrences of flood disasters in recent years resulted in a growing interest on changing characteristics of precipitation associated with the climate change. In recent domestic discussions on mesoscale conditions of extreme precipitation, which seems to concentrate too much in low-level moisture convergence, there is a concern that roles of free tropospheric humidity and upper-level dynamics have been underestimated. Proper understandings of roles of large-scale dynamics on moist convection should be beneficial for early recognitions of hazards or a statistical awareness for future changes in precipitation characteristics. In my talk, I would like to introduce some of our recent works to consider the relationship between precipitation characteristics and free tropospheric humidity, over tropical and subtropical maritime precipitation regions including summertime Japan. The topics include: (1) Finding a congestus regime of precipitation observed from the latent heating (SLH) data derived from the TRMM PR2A25. (2) Relationship between convective schemes and the double ITCZ bias. (3) Roles of an Atmospheric River and a Cut Off Low in the heavy rainfall event in Hiroshima. (4) Environments of extremely heavy precipitation events and extremely tall precipitation events observed from TRMM Precipitation Radar.
